Battles

Not often I hear guitar-driven music that I like nowadays, but there are exceptions, and Battles is certainly one. Found this track whilst leafing through the hundreds of free tracks at Insound and I think its excellent.

Comprising of members of four previous bands I thought it right to check out their earlier work, and I came across the Don Caballero track on Epitonic. The first half of this one is awesome...

Dim Mak's website has a pretty cool feature where you can listen to any of their MP3s at random, allowing you to become acquainted with a range of their artists. Just load a song and you'll see the random track thing. Must admit I didn't like anything I heard as much as Battles, but hey...

Apologies for the lack of pictures but my new internet connection seems a little bit choosy about what I do at the moment...

B Fleischmann

More mellow electronica. Remixer of Subtle's recent single 'F.K.O' (see Wednesday's post), B Fleischmann also makes his own stuff. Reminds me a little of Plone with their simple melodies, but its a little fuzzier and glitchier. If you like these tracks you can get another 4 free at his website, along with one of his videos.

Nobukazu Takemura / Child's View

Found this site which i thought worthy of a mention. Worth exploring the different sections as there is a lot of free music here. Thought I'd include a couple of tracks I found from Nobukazu Takemura recording as himself and under the moniker Child's View.

Takemura designed the sounds for the Latte and Macaron (pictured) variations of Sony's Aibo Robot Dog, design by Katsura Moshino.

Couldn't find much on the net about Takemura, but the fact that I don't speak Japanese doesn't aid the matter... Did find this interview at Winter Mittens though.

Subtle

Dose One getting a fair bit of air time here at the moment...
Two free tracks available to download from Lex Records, both good. 'Eneby Kurs' is especially good - I've had it on repeat nearly all day. Taken from the 'Lexoleum' compilation available on Bleep. While your there, listen to the untitled Madlib tune on the same compilation - v good. 'F.K.O' is Subtle's last single and its pretty cool too.

Delia Derbyshire

Taken from delia-derbyshire.org:

'In 1959, on approaching Decca records, Delia was told that the company DID NOT employ women in their recording studios...In 1960 Delia joined the BBC as a trainee studio manager. She excelled in this field, but when it became apparent that the fledgling Radiophonic Workshop was under the same operational umbrella, she asked for an attachment there - an unheard of request, but one which was, nonetheless, granted. Delia remained 'temporarily attached' for years, regularly deputising for the Head, and influencing many of her trainee colleagues...Within a matter of months she had created her recording of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme, one of the most famous and instantly recognisable TV themes ever. On first hearing it Grainer was tickled pink: "Did I really write this?" he asked. "Most of it," replied Derbyshire.'

Delia Derbyshire - Dreams (edit B).mp3
This is really spooky and evocative. Taken from a 45 minute piece...

Delia Derbyshire - Tutankhamun's Egypt.mp3
from the website: 'It's a full-on Delian trip... starting with trumpet calls from a 1939 recording of the silver trumpet found in Tutankhamun's burial chamber'

Delia Derbyshire - Moogies Bloogies.mp3
early UK hip hop? I think so...

Aesop Rock / cLOUDDEAD

Taken from the Dirty Loop website

Aesop Rock - Basic Cable.mp3
Float - what an album...
cLOUDDEAD - Rifle Eyes.mp3
This track is from cLOUDDEAD's latest and last release 'Ten'. Didn't like Ten as much as their first full-length - see for yourselves. You can listen to it at Bleep (its the one with the clouds on the cover)

cLOUDDEAD - This About The City.mp3
This track is more similar to the lo-fi, ambient nature of the first album. Check out the Michael Jackson sample...

Tom Glazer and Dottie Evans

Stumbled upon this great site recently. This guy has painstakingly digitized his collection of Singing Science records from when he was a kid. These things are awesome. My favourites are below, but I recommend getting them all.

Thrill Jockey Records

Just been going through the free mp3s on the Thrill Jockey website. Some good stuff - nearly all the artists have one free track to download to whet your appetite.

My three favourites were:
Eight Bold Souls - Pachinko.mp3
Hectic, mental, but really melodic and funky as well...superb
Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake - Losel Drolma.mp3
from the site:
"The notion of recording tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson and drummer Hamid Drake as a duo is something that has been kicked around for years, simply because they play so beautifully together"
Nobukazu Takemura - Cogwheel.mp3
One of my favourite tracks of his, and of anyone's for that matter. Totally beautiful track...
