Phonophani
Upon first hearing Genetic Engineering, I really didn't like it. I promptly forgot about it and let it gather dust on my CD rack. Rediscovering it recently has been such a joy that I now can't imagine what I was thinking...
Philip Sherburne of The Wire described it as "one of the saddest albums of recent years. Something about its openended melodies and unresolving structures makes it undeniably, if unreasonably, melancholy - like the slow passage of prickly lit cities as seen from 30, 000 feet." I think this is far more eloquent than I would have described it, but I agree exactly with what he says. Lavenderloops is the first track on the album...

He has a new album out now on Rune Grammofon called Oak or Rock, and there are some free, but low bit-rate tracks available for download. Haven't given them the same amount of attention as Genetic Engineering yet, but from the first few listens it sounds like Espen has made another astounding album.

Espen's first, self-titled album is out of print, but you can download it here for a small fee. I.F.A is the first track on the album.
